Strategy Games That Don't Punish Beginners

Strategy Games That Don't Punish Beginners

Strategy has a reputation for being intimidating, and honestly, some of it is earned. But a well-designed strategy game teaches you as you play instead of dumping a manual on your lap.

Ironline Command does this well. Its campaign introduces one idea at a time, then quietly asks you to combine them, so by the end you're doing things you couldn't have imagined in mission one. That gradual mastery is the whole joy of the genre.

My advice for newcomers: lose on purpose. Push a bad plan to its ugly conclusion and you'll understand the systems far faster than by playing it safe. The best strategy games make losing informative rather than frustrating.

Start slow, embrace the pause button if there is one, and don't compare yourself to leaderboard veterans. Everyone was clueless in their first campaign.
